Coastal Erosion

Standing in the bow of the boat, I trace the lines on the screen of the bathymetric GPS sounder with my finger, mirroring the slow methodical route of the boat as it travels down each transect, calling out if we have veered too far off the line. I am on the boat this morning with Mark Adams, the GIS specialist for the Cape Cod National Seashore and Graham Giese, an oceanographer studying coastal processes on Cape Cod. Today, we have the sole purpose of collecting data for the Marindin Project, a collaborative project sponsored by the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and the National Park Service to develop a current model of the coastal erosion and accretion occurring on the outer coastline.

Cape Cod Erosion Update

The home at 133 South Pamet Road in Truro sits a little closer to the edge of the dune after recent storms eroded the shoreline. Barriers have been erected at the entrance of the beach.

Storm speeds Truro erosion

January ’10 storms battered several Truro beaches causing significant erosion and causing concern for the town and homeowners with homes close to the shoreline. As of late January the path at Ballston Beach leading down to the beach had completely eroded away, necessitating what was left of the road to be closed off while repairs were being made.
